Season 2010-2011

"... absolute guff..."

Hamilton Academical 1-2 ICT FC 14th May2011

Caley Jags finish the season taking all three points from a close fought encounter with Accies. Richie Foran put them ahead late in the first half. He met an Aaron Doran cross on 44 mins and headed past keeper Tomas Cerny. Hamilton replied 5 mins into the second half when Simon Mensing headed in from 6 yards following a Garry McDonald corner. On 57 mins Caley Jags regained the lead when Adam Rooney scored after picking up a Nick Ross pass. Hamilton should have drawn level on 72 minutes but Mensing failed to convert a penalty. Caley Jags end the season comfortable in seventh place after their return to the SPL.

Manager Terry Butcher: "How we won that game I do not know. For forty-four minutes that was absolute guff. I didn't explode afterwards because it's the last game of the season and we've just won four in a row over a hectic period. If anyone had said we'd win all four I'd have thought they'd been drinking... What should have been a happy dressing room today is a sad one because a lot of the boys are saying goodbye. We've got one more emotional fish-and-chip stop in Auchterarder to come. It's been a wonderful season, far beyond our expectations."

ICT FC 2-0 Hibernian 11th May 2011

Two goals ensured Caley Jags gained another three points in the penultimate game of the season. The first came when a Ross Tokely cross was met by Richie Foran who headed in off the post on 40 mins. The lead was then doubled early in the second half. An Adam Rooney cross on 51 mins broke to Nick Ross. He volleyed past Jakub Divis from the edge of the box to claim Caley Jags' second and final goal of the match. In the closing stages sixteen year old Liam Polworth came on as the club's youngest ever first team player.

Manager Terry Butcher referring to Nick Ross: "... We've all been waiting for that and it wasn't a bad strike was it! He's had a phenomenal season. It was Nick's 50th appearance for the club, our 50th league goal and we're on 50 points... It wasn't the greatest of games but we improved as it went on and looked the most potent of the teams."

ICT FC 1-0 St Mirren 7th May 2011

Caley Jags sealed their claim to seventh place in the league with today's win over the Buddies. With two games remaining this season they are seven points ahead of their nearest rivals. The points came on 85 mins when substitute Adam Rooney scored after earlier hitting the woodwork three times. 15 mins earlier Caley Jags went down to ten men after Russell Duncan was shown a red card. The challenge now is to achieve 50 points by the end of the season.

Manager Terry Butcher: "We were very flat up until we brought on Adam Rooney, Nick Ross and Lee Cox. However, I knew it would be like that because we went to the peak when beating Celtic in midweek and you cannot get much higher than that. I wanted to make changes to give these lads a bit of a rest that had put in such a shift, but the guys on the bench were itching to come on and make a difference. It's lovely that we've now guaranteed seventh position and the club has certainly come a long way in two years. We're disappointed not to have got into the top six, but we're on 47 points with two games to go, so we're looking to get to 53."

ICT FC 3-2 Celtic 4th May 2011

A reported 57% possession for Caley Jags confirmed their dominance in their latest encounter with Celtic. Although Adam Rooney forced an own goal from Charlie Mulgrew after only 7 mins it just took a further 2 mins for Kris Commons to bring the teams back level. The teams went into the break without either side gaining further advantage. Caley Jags came out after the break with the greater determination. This was rewarded first on 53 mins when Grant Munro blasted them ahead again. A volley from Shane Sutherland increased the lead on 62 mins. A late penalty on 90+3 mins was converted by Commons, but it was too little too late for Celtic and a deserved win for Caley Jags.

Manager Terry Butcher: "... We didn't have any pressure to to get a result. We just wanted to show we could play a damn sight better than we did on Saturday at Aberdeen... We'll have a look again at Grant's situation as he certainly didn't do himself any harm. Every player here is playing for the futures, contracted or not. Grant responded the right way, the correct way and a magnificent way. I also thought Adam Rooney has his best game for us."

ICT FC 1-1 Hearts 16th April 2011

Aaron Doran's volley on 6 mins put Caley Jags into a lead they maintained throughout the first half. Despite further opportunities falling to Adam Rooney and Nick Ross Caley Jags did not add to the score line. Hearts replied with an equaliser on 53 mins when Stephen Elliot beat Ryan Esson. A second yellow card for Ross Tokely saw him sent off with 12 mins to go, but Hearts were unable to capitalise on this advantage.

Manager Terry Butcher: "For an end-of-season game that didn't mean anything, it was brilliant. How it only finished 1-1 I'll never know."

ICT FC 1-2 Celtic 16th March 2011

Caley Jags took the lead against Celtic in their Scottish Cup Quarter Final encounter, on 44 mins, from an Adam Rooney penalty. Moments earlier Richie Foran had been brought down by Glenn Loovens. Celtic managed to draw level before half time when Joe Ledleys scored, on 45+2 mins, following an Emilio Izaguirre cross. Celtic ensured they progressed to the Semi Finals when Ledley got his second on 68 mins, heading in from a Ki Sung-Yeung free kick.

Manager Terry Butcher: "... We have had the best chances in the first half. We had some great chances in the second half. Their keeper has had to work harder than my keeper. I thought my players were terrific, they kept a good shape, picked off Celtic with passes and got in behind them. Fraser Forster has made an unbelievable save from Sutherland when it was 1-1."

ICT FC 3-0 Motherwell 5th March 2011

It was three goals with no reply that allowed Caley Jags to return to the top six just one point behind today's visitors, Motherwell. Caley Jags went ahead on 18 mins when Shane Sutherland scored his first goal for the team. Richie Foran doubled the lead on 64 mins and substitute Alex MacDonald got the third on 72 mins, just 30 secs after coming on.

Manager Terry Butcher: "I'm thrilled for the boys, they are an honest bunch. We are not the greatest passing side but, my goodness, we are one of the hardest-working sides in the the league. When we show that tenacity, hunger and desire, it will take a good team to stop us.We like to be underdogs and get stuck in..."

ICT FC 0-2 Dundee United 1st March 2011

Caley Jags lost at home to Dundee United and drop out off the top half of the table. Substitute Prince Bauben scored for United, three minutes after coming on, his 75 min strike finishing in the corner of the net. They sealed the points on 90 mins when fellow substitute David Robertson fired in low past Ryan Esson.

Manager Terry Butcher: "... It was a very listless and poor performance. We didn't talk to each other or hunt in packs. It was very isolated. We were a team of individuals... We got into a great position before Christmas and we have thrown it away... The people who get into the top six are the ones who really want to be in the top six and we just haven't shown that desire."

It was another welcome home win for Caley Jags as they put two goals past St Johnstone with no reply. Ross Tokely put Caley Jags ahead on 28 mins when he headed in from an Aaron Doran corner. The second came on 62 mins when Russell Duncan scored from 6 yards after an Adam Rooney cut-back. .

Manager Terry Butcher: "I thought the effort they put in today was terrific... I thought our boys had worked hard to defend - Ryan Esson had one save to make all day. He wasn't worked the whole game, which I was pleased about. We had to look at the team, we've been hit by injuries and we had players in the wrong position, but the effort and commitment the players put in was fantastic. When we broke, we broke quickly with good pace and everybody played their part. It was a great team performance..."

ICT FC 5-1 Greenock Morton 5th February 2011

Caley Jags enjoyed a decisive home win in the Scottish Cup Fifth Round at the expense of Greenock Morton. The opener came on 19 mins when Adam Rooney slid the ball through to Richie Foran who scored from just inside the box. On 38 mins Foran beat the offside trap and got the ball across the box to Rooney who scored in off the post. Caley Jags added a further three goals in the second half and Morton beat the Caley Jags defence for a consolation goal. Substitute Dani Sanchez's 62 min cross was headed home by Chris Hogg. Rooney then headed in his second of the day on 65 mins. On 83 mins it was Morton's Derek Lyle who managed to beat keeper Jonny Tuffy. Caley Jags final goal came on 85 mins when Richie Foran scored from eight yards.

Manager Terry Butcher: "... To get that winning feeling back and put smiles on faces again was the most pleasing aspect of our performance..."

ICT FC 0-2 Aberdeen 26th January 2011

Caley Jags went down to ten men after 18 mins of play, and finish the match down two goals to Aberdeen. It all started well enough but an off the ball incident resulted in the dismissal of Grant Munro. Despite a determined effort from the remaining team members Aberdeen went ahead on 44 mins with a goal from Ryan Jack. A second Dons' goal on 49 mins, this time to Nick Blackman, secured them all three points.

Manager Terry Butcher: "I thought the players were terrific. They worked their socks off for each other and passed it well. How we've not scored I'll never know.... It's disappointing because it was all set up to be a good game for us, but if any of our players are going to raise their arms like that then they deserve a red card."

Dani Sanchez scored for Caley Jags with a close range strike after keeper Tomas Cerny fended off attempts from Nick Ross and Adam Rooney. Mickael Antoine-Curier converted a penalty, for Hamilton, on 45+1 mins after Gary McDonald was fouled in the box. Caley Jags continue to edge nearer the 30 points mark. .

Manager Terry Butcher: "...I was disappointed with our play at times today. Our passing was sloppy and our final ball was poor. We've had a lot of journeys recently and you could see at the end that was taking its toll."

It was substitute Dani Sanchez who scored for Caley Jags on 90+2 mins, and just 2 mins later set up Rooney for the second.

Manager Terry Butcher: "You have to praise the players for their patience and perseverance. We found ourselves up against a very resilient and well organised Elgin City. Fair play to their manager and Barry Wilson, they've got a good system. They fought hard and blocked everything. We put fresh legs on and those fresh legs got their reward. Caley Jags' remarkable run of away results finally came to an end. Despite a series of fine saves by Ryan Esson, St Johnstone's Collin Samuel broke the deadlock on 85 mins. His close range shot into the roof of the net was enough to secure all three points for the Perth side.

Manager Terry Butcher: "I think the way we lost it was very meek, it was very poor. So I'm disappointed in that. That's not what we've done to get that great run all year. That performance was nowhere near what we've been like on the road so that's doubly disappointing, and trebly disappointing because we haven't scored for the first time since August in the SPL. It's not been a great day."

ICT FC 1-3 Kilmarnock 29th December 2010

Caley Jags end the year in a comfortable position in the top half of the table. Despite a home loss to Kilmarnock in their final game of the year their performance over the past twelve months has been impressive, leaving everyone optimistic for the coming year. It was Craig Bryson that put Killie ahead on 26 mins. The lead was extended by Liam Kelly header on 68 mins. Richie Foran scored for the Caley Jags three minutes later. Killie, however, were awarded a penalty which was stopped by Ryan Esson. The rebound was slotted home by Jamie Hamill on 78 mins.

Manager Terry Butcher: "We had a go and I think it was a great game of football to watch for any neutral as it was end to end, lots of chances, good passing, good movement. I can't fault my players' effort. I thought they were terrific considering they had played on Sunday and Kilmarnock hadn't... Kilmarnock are a very good side. I think they will be a cert to be in the top six if they continue to play like that."

ICT FC 1-2 St Mirren 26th December 2010

The Caley Jags' determination and fighting spirit took a Christmas holiday as the team surrendered the lead and all three points to St Mirren. Lee Cox put the Caley Jags ahead on 8 mins when he tapped home a rebound from the crossbar. Just before half time, on 44 mins, St Mirren pulled level when Steven Thomsom scored the first of his two goals. His second came on 85 mins securing the win for the Paisley side.

Manager Terry Butcher: "It is the worst I have felt after a game all season... We have thrown three points away. It is the manner of our defeat more than anything else. It really sits badly with me. We missed a fantastic opportunity. We scored early and I think one or two just thought that was it, game over. Some of the things the players did were unbelievable. It is something I have not seen from the players for a long while. Where did it come from? They have been told. We will look at what we have got and bounce back from there."

On 57 mins Rangers drew level with a fine 20 yard shot from Kenny Miller. The game finished level after a penalty save on 77 mins when Ryan Esson denied Miller his second of the match.

Manager Terry Butcher: "We were very disappointed, I thought we did enough to win it in the first half, when we could have scored a couple more goals, and I was hoping it would end at half-time, but unfortunately the game doesn't work like that... 2010 has been the best year in this club's history, what we want is to prove that we're not a flash in the pan."

Celtic 2-2 ICT FC 27th November 2010

Caley Jags left Parkhead having completed a full year undefeated, in the league, on the road. After going two goals down to Celtic it looked an unlikely end to the day. However, goals from Richie Foran and Grant Munro ensured it ended in celebrations for the team, management and supporters. Although Caley Jags never looked overwhelmed by their opponents it was Ki Sung-Yeung who managed to beat Ryan Esson on 38 mins to put Celtic ahead. Going into the break there was still only one goal in it. That is how it remained until almost half way through the second half. Celtic's second came from Paddy McCourt, on 65 mins, after a solo run through the Caley Jags' defence. On 70 mins Foran took advantage of a Celtic defencive blunder and fired in off the post. Caley Jags pressed ahead for the equaliser. It came on 83 mins when Adam Rooney's overhead kick was met by Munro who nodded it home. Celtic tried to regain the lead but Caley Jags ended the day having achieved a remarkable new club record.

Manager Terry Butcher: "At 2-0 down, I thought the record was gone, but they've got a lot of spirit, a phenomenal belief, attitude and camaraderie. Fifty two weeks on the road without defeat is magnificent. They didn't let their heads drop, they kept plugging away and got the first goal thanks to a bit of indecision in the Celtic defence. After that, we thought let's have a go, and we got the equaliser. We had to withstand a bit of a siege at the end, but we're just thrilled. It's a great achievement and the players deserve a lot of credit."

Roy McBain Testimonial

Roy McBain joined an ICT Legends side to take on a youthful Caley Jags side for his testimonial. The Legends took the lead, on 20mins, after Paul Sheerin beat Jonny Tuffey following a Charlie Christie free-kick. Caley Jags, however, responded after the break. Shane Sutherland levelled the score on 49 mins. On 56 mins Chad Stewart headed home from a David Chambers cross. An Eric Odhiambo cross was then met by Sutherland who netted his second on 60 mins. Chambers completed the scoring on 78 mins.

Teammate Grant Munro: "Roy's still a fantastic player and a terrific guy to have around the place. He's been here for 10 years and he's one of the fittest boys you'll ever meet. He's quite a skilful player too and perhaps doesn't get enough credit for that. We see it every day in training. When he's on the bench, he's itching to get on. He still encourages all the players on and off the park, he's a great guy."

Caley Jags maintain their unbeaten home record against Hibernian in style with an Adam Rooney hat-trick. Richie Foran put Caley Jags ahead on 7 mins. Early in the second half Hibs' Paul Hanlon was red carded for a handball on the line. Rooney converted the resulting penalty, on 51 mins, to put Caley Jags two ahead. Derek Riordan pulled one back on 66 mins when he rounded Ryan Esson. It only took Caley Jags 4 mins regain their two goal lead when Rooney scored his second. Ross Tokely brought Colin Nish down in the box and on 78 mins Liam Miller scored from the spot. Rooney replied two minutes later to claim his hat-trick and all three points for Caley Jags. After 14 games played Caley Jags deservedly sit fourth in the Scottish Premier League.

Manager Terry Butcher: "It was an incredible match. The response after we conceded the goals was terrific. Adam Rooney worked his socks off. There is a lot of heart in the squad, that's the important thing, a real belief in the whole team. We might have taken teams by surprise with the way that we can pass it. We are not a route-one team. Caley Jags achieved their first ever league victory over Hamilton, at New Douglas Park, with goals from Adam Rooney and Jonny Hayes. Hayes then went on to put Caley Jags into the lead 3 mins later having picked up a Rooney cross. Rooney sealed the points on 59 mins with a back-post header from a Hayes delivery.

Manager Terry Butcher: "Hamilton dominated the first half and we weren't at the races but, at only 1-0, we were still in the game. I simply asked my players: "Is this how it's going to end? Are we going to throw it away meekly? Are we going to throw in the towel after a year's hard work?" We then found ourselves 2-1 up without having played any decent football but after that confidence flooded through the team."

ICT FC 2-0 Aberdeen 2nd October 2010

It's an historic win for Caley Jags. A convincing first home win, against Aberdeen, moves them to fifth in the table. Jonny Hayes put Caley jags ahead, on 19 mins, when he beat Andrew Considine and chipped the ball over the head of Mark Howard to see it fall into the far corner of the net. Then on 61 mins Ryan Esson launched the ball far up the park. Zander Diamond tried to chest it down towards Howard. His weak effort was enough to allow Adam Rooney the opportunity to nip in and lob the ball past Howard so that it rolled slowly into the net.

Manager Terry Butcher: "I'm delighted with that performance and there wasn't a single failure on our side. Our first goal was a real fluke, though Johnny will tell you differently. Even our second was a bit different because Adam chased a ball he had no right to get and nipped in to put the sort of side-spin on the ball Ronnie O'Sullivan would be proud of to get it in the net. Odhiambo put Caley Jags in front 2 mins into stoppage time, at the end of the first-half, following an exchange of passes with Nick Ross. Odhiambo then went on to double the lead 5 mins into the second half, after Johnny Hayes picked him out after winning the ball from McQuade. McGown pulled one back on 77 mins. Despite sustained pressure by the Buddies an equaliser did not come.

Manager Terry Butcher: " Our away record is unbelievable, that's 28th November last year, in the league, since we last lost and we keep marching on. Seven points out of nine away from home and none out of nine at home. We have to try to get that right.... A lot of these boys had played ninety minutes at Celtic Park, so it took its toll with the heat as well - it was a beautiful day here... in the end, we had to hang on, but we got the goals and that is all that matters."

Dundee United 0-4 ICT FC 22nd August 2010

Caley Jags raised their game following last week's narrow defeat to Celtic. Sustained pressure, for the whole 90 mins, resulted in four Caley Jags goals and a clean sheet. Dundee United failed to match the highland side for determination and energy. The opening goal, rocketed from 30 yards, came on 34 mins from Kevin McCann. The second came early in the second half when Adam Rooney scored on 51 mins, after being set up by Eric Odhiambo. Russell Duncan netted the third 2 mins later, beating Dusan Pernis with a half volley, following a McCann throw in. The game was sealed on 82 mins when Rooney was downed in the box by Gary Kenneth. The resulting penalty, taken by Rooney, easily beat keeper Pernis ensuring Caley Jags' first three points of their SPL season.

Manager Terry Butcher: "… It was the best performance since I came to the club. We used the ball well, we won it back well and I've told the players how pleased I am not just at a great result but at a display to match. We learned from the Celtic match and there was no second half sag this time… Peter Houston, manager of the Scottish Cup winners, said:"Caley Thistle out-thought and out-fought us."… Music to our ears!”

ICT FC 0-1 Celtic 14th August 2010

Caley Jags returned to the SPL with the season's opening fixure against Celtic at Tulloch Caledonian Stadium. Caley Jags started the better of the two sides but were unable to convert the early chances they created. The second half saw a more determined Celtic side and their efforts were rewarded on 56 mins with a fine solo effort from Paddy McCourt.

Manager Terry Butcher: "... We had a very good first 45. I know Celtic hit the frame twice but we had some good chances as well. Yet in the second period I don't think we had a shot. It's disappointing because we had done so well. But for Ryan Esson, the score would have been a lot more. It could have been a lot worse than 1-0. We can have no complaints. We can hold our hands up and say we were beaten by a better team in that second period. It was a good lesson to learn, that the game lasts 90 minutes..."

ICT FC 1-1 Royal Antwerp 7th August 2010

Caley Jags started the stronger of the two sides and had the early chances. However, half time was reached with neither side scoring. Antwerp went ahead on 59 mins when Kevin Oris headed home a Kerem Zevne cross. The Caley Jags' equaliser came on 70 mins from Richie Foran who had come on, as a substitute, a minute earlier. He scored from the spot having been brought down by Thomas Phibel.

Manager Terry Butcher: “I thought Nick (Ross) was the man of the match against Royal Antwerp and at just 18 is a great prospect. He is on the verge of selection for the Celtic game on merit, not on anything else. He has played in big games and he has already scored a winning goal for the first-team against Morton last season. It will be an interesting week as everybody will be vying to get into the team to play Celtic.”

ICT FC 0-0 Real Valladolid 3rd August 2010

Caley Jags as good as held off two Real Valladolid teams as the Spanish replaced nine of their players for the second half. The goalless encounter was a good test for the Caley Jags prior to their return to the SPL.

Manager Terry Butcher: "... From a fitness point of view and a technical and tactical point of view it was great. I know it was pre-season but we had to play to more of an SPL standard. The tempo of the game was quick and there were a few meaty challenges. Kenny Gillet did well on his debut and will learn from his first game with us... "

ICT FC 3-0 Queens Park 31st July 2010

Caley Jags' first round CIS Cup encounter resulted in a home win over third division Queen's Park. Caley Jags went ahead on 22 mins when Lee Cox netted from his own rebound shot, which had left keeper Peter Hamilton grounded. Caley Jags went on to score twice more in the second half. Eric Odhiambo scored on 55 mins just after coming on as a substitute. Then, two minutes later Ross Tokely scored from a Danni Sanchez corner.

Manager Terry Butcher: "Queens Park made it very difficult for us and were up for the game today... we eventually got the goal, then changed the system around a bit and scored the other two goals... its still early to look at our SPL form or potential positioning... if you look at other teams at this stage in the season no-one is anywhere near top form, no-one's anywhere near getting everyone gelled and making sure it's right."
